I was talking to my two year old nephew, Kannan, the other day. We were discussing some of the most recent developments in the field of fast algorithms in computational electromagnetics. Well, he is not exactly an expert in this field, but as soon as I mentioned this paper to him, he asked “Uncle Sanjay, is it not what Drs. Song and Chew developed over ten years ago and what a lot of people have been using since then? I think it sounds like mommy taking grandma’s recipe for chicken curry and claiming it to be her own.”
I replied, “Well, Kannan, it is not quite like that. Although Drs. Song and Chew had developed it a long time ago, they never quite published it. So, there is no evidence that this is not new.”

Kannan: “But, Uncle Sanjay, it will be like saying just because grandma never wrote it down the recipe did not exist.”

I: “Kanna, dear, I know it is difficult for you to appreciate it, but if Grandma wants to say your mommy’s recipe is not new, Grandma should provide evidence that she already had it. Since Grandma never wrote it down, she cannot produce that evidence.”

Kannan: “Okay, Uncle Sanjay. But I don’t like mommy doing this. She will not be truthful.”

I: “No darling. Your mommy is a wonderful person and she would never do that. You should also never do such a thing. But there are people in this world who would do such things.”

Kannan: “So what should I do with them?”

I: “Nothing darling. Just ignore them.”

Kannan: “Okay, Uncle Sanjay. I will remember that.”
