An investigation into a line charge inconsistency with EFIE/FMM formulations

in

In the solution of free space antenna and scattering problems, two seemingly equivalent forms of the electric field integral equations are used. The first form is usually referred to as the mixed potential integral equation (MPIE) and the second, the field form or the dyadic Green's function form (DG-EFIE).

The first objective of this study is to show that when the fast multipole method (FMM) is used to accelerate the solution of EFIE, under certain conditions, a combined use of MPIE and DG-EFIE can lead to the creation of spurious line charges. As a result, either the accuracy of the computations or the efficiency of the FMM acceleration suffers.

The second objective is to propose a solution by which some of the lost efficiency of FMM is recovered, without compromising the accuracy.
